Every strong community has people who see what is possible: an entrepreneur ready to open a business, a group working to solve a child care shortage, a donor hoping to leave a local legacy or a volunteer determined to improve the place they call home.

Southwest Initiative Foundation helps turn those ideas into action.

Founded in 1986, the nonprofit community foundation serves 18 counties and two Native Nations across southwest Minnesota. Its work is built around a straightforward mission: connecting people, investing in ideas and building communities where all people can thrive.

That mission takes many forms. SWIF provides financing and technical support to entrepreneurs, invests in child care solutions, awards grants, strengthens nonprofit organizations and helps communities establish local funds that keep charitable giving close to home.

The foundation’s greatest resource, however, may be its ability to bring the right people together.

Rather than arriving with a one-size-fits-all answer, SWIF works alongside residents, business owners and community leaders. Local people understand their communities. SWIF contributes funding, knowledge, relationships and long-term support to help their ideas grow.

Over four decades, those partnerships have produced significant results. By its 40th anniversary in 2026, the foundation had invested $58.7 million through grants and $62.5 million through business loans across the region.

Behind every number is a local story: a business that opened its doors, a community project that moved forward, a child care provider that expanded or a family whose generosity will benefit its hometown for generations.

Southwest Minnesota’s future will not be created by one organization. It will be built by neighbors, leaders, businesses and communities choosing to work together.
