From Morgan's Farmfest to Election Day: Governor's Race Revisits Rural Issues

Amy Klobuchar and Lisa Demuth appeared at the August 5 governor forum in Morgan, where farming and regulation took center stage.

Redwood County had a front-row seat to Minnesota's governor's race on August 5, when Minnesota Farmfest hosted a candidate forum in Morgan. Democratic U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and Republican House Speaker Lisa Demuth appeared with Republican primary contenders Mike Lindell and Kendall Qualls.

The forum brought statewide campaign debates directly to farm country. Candidates discussed agriculture policy, business regulation, health care and government spending. Klobuchar and Demuth went on to face each other in the November 3 general election; Green Party candidate Steven Young is also on the ballot.

For our region, the statewide contest has unusually local roots. The positions candidates voiced in Morgan offer a direct way to evaluate their plans for farms, rural employers and health care access.
