Minnesota Farms Find New Income Opportunities in Agritourism

Corn mazes, farm visits and seasonal events offer ideas for producers in our region.

As farm families look for ways to diversify income, some Minnesota agricultural operations are welcoming visitors for seasonal events and hands-on activities. A University of Minnesota story published October 23 describes corn mazes, pumpkin patches, petting zoos, farm festivals and other forms of agritourism.

The university says Extension is helping farm businesses explore this growing area. Agritourism can offer additional revenue, but also brings questions about safety, staffing, insurance, accessibility and whether there is enough customer demand.

Why it matters in our region: Agriculture is already central to our communities. Farm-based experiences can introduce visitors to local producers while supporting rural businesses and nearby towns. The examples in the University of Minnesota story are from other parts of the state, not a claim about a newly opened attraction here.
