Minnesota's U.S. Senate Race Puts Rural Health Care and Farm Policy in Focus

Peggy Flanagan and Michele Tafoya are competing for Tina Smith's seat as voters weigh Medicaid policy, tariffs and federal spending.

Minnesota's November 3 U.S. Senate election includes DFL Lt. Gov. Peggy Flanagan and Republican Michele Tafoya among candidates seeking the seat that retiring Sen. Tina Smith will vacate. Independent Marisa Simonetti and Libertarian Rebecca Whiting are also on the ballot.

Health care spending and federal policy are major points of disagreement. Flanagan has criticized federal Medicaid and food-assistance cuts and favors expanding health care access. Tafoya has called for changes in government spending and tax policy and has defended Republican budget priorities. The candidates have also discussed the economic impact of federal policy and agriculture.

In Redwood County and across our region, those debates matter to rural hospitals, residents who rely on Medical Assistance, agricultural businesses and families affected by the cost of living. The election will help determine who represents Minnesota in those federal decisions.
