Redwood County Communities Can Seek State Walking and Biking Planning Help
MnDOT offers consultant-led transportation planning without a local funding match; applications close January 18, 2027.

Cities, counties, federally recognized Tribal Nations and other eligible organizations in Redwood County can apply for help developing plans to make walking and biking safer and more practical. Applications to Minnesota Department of Transportation's Active Transportation Planning Assistance program are open through January 18, 2027.
Unlike a traditional construction grant, the award does not send money directly to communities. Instead, MnDOT provides support from a selected consultant to examine existing conditions, gather community input, identify infrastructure needs and recommend ways to improve walking and biking. No local matching funds are required for the planning assistance.
For Redwood County communities, potential topics include safer school routes, crossings near busy streets, connections between neighborhoods and parks, and walking access to local businesses. These are examples of possible planning goals, not announced local projects.
Eligible applicants include cities, counties, Tribal Nations, regional development organizations, special park districts and certain nonprofit organizations with local-government support. Successful applicants must participate in local outreach and demonstrate an interest in implementing the plan. MnDOT expects to announce selections in March 2027, with planning work beginning in spring 2027.
