University of Minnesota Experts Examine How AI Affects Student Learning

A new report offers questions for parents, teachers and schools across our region.

A University of Minnesota-led expert consensus report released October 6 examines how generative artificial intelligence may help or interfere with learning. Thirty education and learning experts reviewed 65 different learning processes, considering both the potential benefits and the risks of using AI tools in education.

The report suggests that AI can support some learning activities, but relying on it for other tasks can weaken opportunities to practice important thinking and memory skills. The analysis is an expert consensus, not proof that every classroom will experience the same effects.

Why it matters in our region: Teachers, students and families in small school districts are navigating these tools, often without large technology departments. A useful local conversation is not simply whether to allow AI, but which kinds of learning should remain student-led.
